LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Two players on the No. 22 Kentucky women?s tennis team were given SEC honors as announced by the league office Wednesday morning. Sophomore Christine Johnston (Columbus, Ohio) and freshman Megan Broderick (Tampa, Fla.) were among fellow competitors given SEC recognition at the conference banquet Wednesday evening.
Both Johnston and Broderick were named to the All-SEC Second Team. Earlier in the year Johnston earned SEC Player of the Week for her performance in Kentucky?s doubleheader against East Tennessee State and Middle Tennessee State. The Ohio native boasts an 18-4 singles record and tallies 12-8 in doubles. Johnston has paired with junior Carolina Escamilla in doubles and the duo has received rankings as high as the No. 20 position.
Broderick was also named to the Freshman All-SEC Team in the honors inaugural year. She has earned three SEC honors throughout the season, the only women?s tennis player to do so this year. The Florida native was first named SEC Freshman of the Week in February for her play in Kentucky?s upset of then-No. 18 Clemson and at then-No. 1 Georgia Tech. Broderick then earned the accolade once in March and again in April. She holds a singles record of 17-5 and a doubles record of 11-9. The Kentucky freshman has been ranked as high as No. 95 in singles and No. 50 in doubles with partner Escamilla.
