PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team continues match play at the ITA All-American championship in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Senior Carolina Escamilla fell in the round of 16 this afternoon during the pre-qualifier, but the Cats are still represented in the qualifying rounds in singles and doubles at the Riviera Tennis Club beginning Tuesday Sept. 30.
Escamilla stood opposite MacCall Harkins of Texas Christian University during the prequalifying round of 16. Harkins took the first set after a difficult 7-6(2) decision. Kentucky’s own was unable to come back in the second, falling 6-2. However, Escamilla continues into the qualifier as one half of the No. 16 duo in the nation. The UK senior pairs up with junior Christine Johnston as one of the 24 teams to automatically advance to the qualifying round.
Kentucky sophomore Megan Broderick was also an automatic entry into the qualifier. Broderick is nationally ranked No. 55 after an 18-6 season in 2008 playing primarily in the number one position. The Wildcat is set to face Olivia Colman of San Diego State in the qualifying round of 64.
Qualifying rounds begin Sept. 30 at the Riviera Tennis Club. Singles rounds one and two will take place on Tuesday as well as round one of doubles. Wednesday Oct. 1 starts rounds three of singles and two and three of doubles. Individuals or teams must win three matches to advance to the main draw. There will be consolation play for first round losers in both the qualifying and main draw.
