LEXINGTON, KY. –
The University of Kentucky men’s tennis team did not drop a set in six singles matches in a 6-0 defeat of Morehead State at Boone Tennis Center.
On court four, UK senior Shane Collins started out the day with by winning ten games in a row to win the first set 6-0 and gain a 4-0 lead in the second set. He won two of the next five games to win the match and give UK a 1-0 lead.
In the next match on court two, Brad Cox easily went up two quick breaks in the first set to gain a 4-1 lead over MSU’s Bradley Bryan. He would go on to win the set 6-2. In the second set, he got an early break to go up 3-0 before Bryan would win two straight games to cut the lead 3-2. Cox held onto his lead and would go on win the second set and match 6-3.
With a 2-0 lead for UK, No. 4 Bruno Agostinelli would start off the first set with an early break to go up 2-0 against MSU’s Greg Anderson. The service break would prove to be the difference in the set and the UK senior went on to win the set, 6-4. Agostinelli’s game caught fire in the second set as he only let Anderson win one game en route to a 6-1 victory. The win gave Kentucky a comfortable 3-0 lead over the Eagles.
On court number three, No. 37 Eric Quigley battled Jason Wolfson. Quigley jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first set, but the match would not be over as MSU’s Wolfson battled back to cut the lead to 3-2. They would each split the next two games before Quigley closed out the set 6-4. Quigley rolled on to the win the second set and the match 6-0, giving Kentucky its fourth team point of the day and securing a UK victory.
UK junior Alex Lambropoulos immediately gained a 3-0 lead in the first set and would go on to end it with a 6-1 win. He would continue to roll leading 4-1 in the second set and would close out the set 6-2.
With Kentucky holding a 5-0 lead, freshman Patrick Bandy fought Charles Hodge to determine if UK could earn a 6-0 sweep. Bandy would use an early break and the next point to gain a 3-0 lead. Hodge would not give up cutting the lead to 3-2, but Brandy won the final three games and won the set 6-2. In the second Bandy earned the match win and the sweep with the Eagles with a 6-1 set win.
The win moves the Wildcats up to 5-2 on the year, while Morehead State falls to a 2-2 record this season.
The Wildcats take on border-rival Indiana in a Saturday afternoon match.
