BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team concluded the 2009 Southeastern Conference Championship with a 918 – a 35-stroke improvement from the previous year – on April 19 at Cobblestone Park Golf Club.

“Conditions were favorable for scoring today but we seemed to be unable to take advantage,” head coach Myra Blackwelder said. “We got off to a decent start, but mid day through the round we lost our rhythm. The girls were fighting their games today, but fought hard to finish strong.”

Senior Mallory Blackwelder and freshman Alyssa Randolph carded a five-over-par 76 in the final round of the tournament. Blackwelder tied for 26th place with a cumulative 224 – a nine-stroke improvement from last year’s score. Randolph shot a 229 securing a tie for 38th place.

Ashlee Rose also broke 80 with a six-over-par 77. The Lexington, Ky., freshman tied for 41st place with a 231.

Junior Kristin Vincent knocked 11 shots off her 2008 score as she carded a combined score of 236 – good for a 49th-place tie.

Sara Hurwitch’s consistent performance landed her a 53rd-place finish with a 238.

No. 41 Kentucky outplayed No. 18 Vanderbilt in the final round with a 308. The Wildcats remained in 11th place.

“Going forward, we travel back to campus with the intent to prepare to take finals and find out on April 27 if we make it to the NCAA post season,” Myra Blackwelder said. “There are three Regional sites: Ohio State, Florida and Arizona State. All and all it was a balanced effort on a golf course that was very demanding.”
