Wildcats Set to Take on General Hackler Championship

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky men’s golf team will resume its spring action with its second tournament of the 2017 slate – the General Hackler Championship March 11-12, held at the scenic Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
What Head Coach Brian Craig is Saying:
“This is going to be a productive trip for our team. We have the General Hackler Championship this weekend and then the Schenkel Invitational over spring break. Both fields are stacked and both are excellent tests of golf. We have had some excellent weather to prepare and will be ready for the challenge.”
About the Lineup:
The starting lineup will feature freshman Matt Liston, sophomore Lukas Euler, juniors Tyler “Chip” McDaniel and Cooper Musselman, and senior Stephen Stallings. Sophomore Fred Allen Meyer will compete as an individual.
Musselman carded three top-10 finishes in his last three events, two in the top five, and hasn’t finished below 20th place in a tournament this season. The Louisville, Kentucky, native blistered the River Course in UK’s last event in Puerto Rico and crafted rounds of 1-under-par or better for every round of the event. He ultimately shot 4-under and tied for fifth place as an individual. Musselman is second on the team in scoring average by a 10th of a stroke at 71.7.
McDaniel leads the team in scoring average at 71.6, and holds the team’s best individual finishes of the season – third at the Steelwood Intercollegiate and tied for third at the Bearcat Invitational. In Puerto Rico, McDaniel finished in a tie for 20th, but fired a staunch 3-under-par 69 on the first day of play.
Stallings matched McDaniel’s finish in the last outing for his third top-20 finish of the season. He also holds a 73.3 average score, which ranks third on the team.
Liston will see his first action as a Wildcat. The freshman from Louisville, Kentucky led Saint Xavier to two consecutive state titles and was an all-state performer during his high school career.
Meyer is more than capable of bouncing back from his last event and looks to do that while competing as an individual. The sophomore has finished among the top-15 individuals twice this season.
The Tournament Field:
This is UK’s second time competing at the event. The Wildcats finished in seventh place back in the 2008-09 season.
This year’s 15-team field features eight schools that have won a tournament this season and nine schools who are currently among the nation’s top 50, including No. 3 Virginia, No. 9 LSU, No. 12 Kent State, No. 15 Wake Forest, No. 35 North Florida, No. 38 Kentucky, No. 39 South Carolina, No. 45 NC State and No. 47 Iowa State.
About the Course:
The Hackler Championship is scheduled to play 36 holes on Saturday and a final 18 holes on Sunday at the par-72, 7,233-yard Dunes Club, annually ranked among the top-10 courses in South Carolina. Fans looking to follow the action can find live results on GolfStat.
