UK Rifle Finishes Fourth at NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Kentucky rifle team placed fourth in its 17th consecutive NCAA Championships appearance, which concluded on Saturday at Ohio State’s French Field House.
“We worked very hard during the season to get to this position,” head coach Harry Mullins said. “We saw some good performances from multiple people on the squad this year. At the end of the day, this team gave it all they had. As a coach, you can’t ask for much more.”
The Wildcats followed their 2331 smallbore performance with 2351 in air rifle on the final day of competition for a 4682 aggregate.
Two Wildcats finished in the top-25 individuals for air rifle. Billy Azzinaro finished in 24th place with a 589 in the discipline, which made him the top Wildcat for the event at 1174. Senior Heather Kirby completed her collegiate career with a 592 to lead UK in the discipline and finish inside the top-15 individuals in 14th place.
Hanna Carr fired a 586, while Jason Spaude fired 584. Sonya may shot 581 in her final event as a Wildcat.
West Virginia (4723), TCU (4706), and Murray State (4692) made up the top-three teams for the second consecutive year.
“This is an event like no other,” Mullins said. “The teams that finished in front of us did a great job throughout the season. I am extremely proud of the way the team battled through the obstacles that they faced this season.”
UK finished fifth at the championships last year after placing sixth in 2015, third in 2014, second in 2012 and 2013, and winning the title 2011.
