BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –

A quartet of Kentucky men’s tennis players claimed first round match wins at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Ohio Valley Regional Championships inside Indiana University’s Indoor Tennis Center in Bloomington, Ind., Friday.

Seventh-seeded Eric Quigley topped Andres Monroy of Ball State. The UK sophomore edged the Cardinal in the first set 7-5 before rolling in the second stanza, 6-1. Ranked No. 70 in the fall ITA preseason rankings, Quigley volleys against Southeastern Conference foe Charlie Jones of Vanderbilt at 11:00 a.m. ET Saturday.

UK senior Alex Lambropoulos dismantled Xavier’s Chris Herringer Friday evening. The Wildcat doubled the Musketeer 6-3 in the first and followed that up with a stronger performance in the second, surrendering just a single game for a 6-1 decision. Ninth-seeded Slavko Bjelica of Purdue awaits Lambropoulos in the second round at 1:00 p.m.

Wildcat Alberto Gonzalez knocked off Purdue’s Branko Kuzmanovic in straight sets. The UK junior used a break of serve of the Boilermaker to gain the advantage in the first set at 6-4. Gonzalez downed his opponent 6-3 in the second to advance. He battles fourth-seeded John Peers of Middle Tennessee State in the second round at 11:00 a.m.  Peers is ranked No. 58 nationally.

Kentucky’s Brad Cox needed three sets to take down his opponent. Memphis’ Charlie Ramsay edged Cox in the first set 7-5. The Wildcat bounced back in the second to take the set 6-2. In the final set, the UK junior made good on an extra service break to clinch the match at 6-4. Cox meets ninth-seeded Ryan Lipman of Vanderbilt in the second round at 12:30 p.m.  

Sophomore Chris Leeper fell in his first round match against Indiana’s Josh MacTaggart on the Hoosier’s home court 6-1, 6-1.

The Kentucky doubles team of Lambropoulos and Gonzalez battled to a tiebreaker against Ball State’s freshman pairing of Austin Sansone and Alex Doherty. The Wildcats gained the upper hand in the breaker early en route to a 7-3 win for the 9-8 decision. The Blue and White duo faces the tourney’s second-seeded team of Austen Childs and Simon Childs of Louisville in a second round match at 9:00 a.m. Saturday. The Cardinals are ranked 10th nationally.

The No. 24 ranked doubles team of Cox and Quigley is seeded fifth in the draw. After drawing a first round bye, the Wildcats will serve against Eastern Kentucky’s Niklas Schroeder and Philip Janz in an 8:00 a.m. second round contest.

All second round matches are scheduled for Saturday morning followed by round of 16 contests later in the day for both draws.
