LEXINGTON, Ky.

— The University of Kentucky track and field team opened its 2010 outdoor season, slating 10 event wins at the University of Central Florida Black and Gold Challenge in Orlando, Fla., on Saturday.

In a tuned down introduction to the outdoor season, the meet consisted of a small field of select teams that included athletes from Arkansas, Bethune-Cookman, Florida, Florida Tech, Kentucky and host Central Florida.

Junior David Banks, with a jump of 7.17m/23-06.25 won the long jump competition, defeating teammate Steve Crouse as he added to his personal-best mark by 2.25 inches, set earlier in the year at the Kentucky Invitational. After receiving All-Southeastern Conference Freshman team honors in the mile, Patrick McGregor picked up right where he left off as he topped the leaderboard in the 1,500m run with a time of 3:54.43. Chris Heibell and fellow freshman Matt Sonnenfeldt followed closely behind in fourth and fifth position with time of

 and

3:59.31

 respectively.

On the women’s side in the 1,500m run, freshman Cally Macumber, who also received All-SEC Freshman honors, edged out senior teammate Katherine Peterson by 0.3 seconds with a time of 4:34.33. Similar to the men, freshman Samantha Norman finished in third place with a time of 4:45.38.

Coming off a record-setting indoor season that included capturing the school record, sophomore Samantha Stenzel set an outdoor personal best with a vault of 3.66m/12-00 to finish in second place in the event.

The Cats dive into the 2010 outdoor season when they return to action at the Yellow Jacket Classic in Atlanta, Ga., March 26-27.
