LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s tennis team is set to host the 2010 USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Indoor Championships at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex and the Lexington Tennis Club, starting Oct. 21 in Lexington, Ky.

The tournament will feature a 44-player singles qualifying round, advancing 11 players to the 64 player singles main draw. The tournament, which will be played entirely indoors, will also feature a doubles qualifying round that will result in six doubles duos advancing to the doubles main draw.

Singles qualifying and doubles qualifying will start the event on Thursday at both the Boone Tennis Complex and the Lexington Tennis Club, followed by the first round of singles and two rounds of doubles play Friday. On Saturday, action will move solely to the Lexington Tennis Club with the doubles quarterfinals, singles round of 32, round of 16 and the singles consolation rounds. The event will move back to UK’s campus Sunday with the doubles semifinals, singles quarterfinals, semifinals and the conclusion of the singles consolation. Both the singles and doubles finals will be played at UK on Monday. All time are ET and subject to change. A full schedule of events is posted below.

The event will feature some of the best players in the collegiate ranks, including nine ranked players in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason singles poll. The list of ranked players include: No. 1 J.P. Smith (Tennessee), No. 8 Eric Quigley (Kentucky), No. 10 Austen Childs (Louisville), No. 20 Ryan Lipman (Vanderbilt), No. 21 Rhyne Williams (Tennessee), No. 32 Alex Musialek (Kentucky), No. 63 Simon Childs (Louisville), No. 83 Tennys Sandgren (Tennessee) and No. 93 Grega Teraz (ETSU). There will also be four ranked doubles teams at the event, featuring No. 8 Quigley/Brad Cox (Kentucky), No. 45 Childs/Viktor Maksimcuk (Louisville), No. 47 Jordan Smith/David Henry (Memphis) and No. 48 Adam Baker/Lipman (Vanderbilt).

Kentucky will be joined at the event by Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Lipscomb, Louisville, Purdue, UT-Chattanooga, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, IUPUI, Tennessee Tech, East Tennessee State, Butler, Memphis, Ball State, Wright State and Xavier.

“This is the toughest regional tournament in the country,” Kentucky head coach Dennis Emery said. “When you mix the country’s No. 1 player in J.P. Smith, No. 8 player in Eric Quigley, who went to a grand slam final, and No. 10 player in Austen Childs, who was a NCAA finalist last year, along with two other top-21 players, it is a tough road to the championship. Our team is looking forward to this event not only because it is home for us but because of the level of competition.”

The Wildcats will be represented well at the event, including No. 8 Quigley, No. 32 Musialek and No. 8 Quigley/Cox. Three other UK players will join Quigley and Musialek in the singles main draw, including seniors Alberto Gonzalez and Brad Cox and sophomore Anthony Rossi. Freshman Maks Gold and juniors Matt Davis and Chris Leeper will play in the singles qualifying to bid for a spot in the main draw. Gold will receive a bye in the first round, while Davis will play Riyad Bennoui of Wright State at 10:30 a.m. at UK and Leeper will square off against Shaun Bussert of Ball State at 10:30 a.m. at LTC.

Kentucky has two doubles tandems in the doubles main draw in top-seeded Quigley/Cox and the French duo of Musialek/Rossi. Gold and Davis will team up and play in the doubles qualifying, facing Strecker/Salazar from Lipscomb in the opening round.

Last year, Kentucky had a successful tournament with Quigley taking home the singles title with a 6-3, 6-2 straight-sets victory over Lipman in the championship match. Quigley and Cox advanced to the semifinals of the doubles main draw in 2009 before falling to Davey Sandgren and Smith of Tennessee. The 2009 regional was at the IU Tennis Center in Bloomington, Ind.
