STARKVILLE, Miss. – Behind a tremendous defensive effort from the floor the Kentucky volleyball team scored a 3-1 (25-17, 18-25, 25-19, 25-18) victory at Mississippi State on Friday. The Wildcats notched a season-best 77 digs in the victory led by a match-high 21 from sophomore Stephanie Klefot and a career-high total from freshman Whitney Billings with 19.
Kentucky (14-11, 8-7) had previously earned a pair of sweeps behind a dominating block effort, in tonight’s victory the winning factor came from the back row as four players notched 12 or more digs in the win. Senior Lauren Rapp posted 14 and sophomore Christine Hartmann added 12 to round out the players in double-figures in the category for the Blue and White.
“Our defense won the match for us tonight which has been a point of emphasis for us in practice this week,” UK coach Craig Skinner said. “Offensively our middles, Becky (Pavan) and Gretchen (Giesler) put up big numbers for us. As long as we have a great defensive effort and a strong serving presence we usually come out on top.”
Juniors Becky Pavan and Gretchen Giesler led the offensive output for the Wildcats. Pavan had a match-high 13 kills on .423 hitting and Giesler added 10 on a .389 clip. Billings and senior Blaire Hiler each added nine. Hartmann had her team-leading sixth double-double effort with 39 assists to go along with her 12 digs.
