FORT WORTH, Texas – Newcomers Henri Junghänel and Emily Holsopple posted stellar scores in air rifle to lead the Kentucky rifle team, but defending NCAA Champion TCU edged the Wildcats by four points, 4679-4675, on Friday at the TCU Rifle Range.

“Overall I felt the team responded well so far on our first road match,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “We had some areas where we left points on the board and we will see tomorrow if we learned from that. The team overall stayed with the match throughout. Tomorrow will be a test of what type of team we are and can be. A loss is always hard to take, yet the team score we shot is within the range that we have been operating.”

Kentucky (5-1) fell by only four points in the loss to the 2009-10 NCAA Champions, with the Horned Frogs barely edging the Wildcats in both guns. UK was led by Junghänel and Holsopple, with Junghänel totaling a 595 in air rifle and Holsopple contributing a 592 in air rifle. Ethan Settlemires led the team with a 582 in smallbore, with Heather Greathouse finishing with a 581 in smallbore and a 584 in air rifle.

“We are looking for that day that all of the shooters can match their good performances with high numbers,” Mullins said. “I feel that we are getting close to that day with every shot we shoot. When that day comes we will see what we can really do. In the meantime we have to keep working on our plans and stay focused in our goals.”

Ed Ryznar finished with a 588 in air rifle and a 569 in smallbore, with Junghänel totaling a 577 in smallbore and Holsopple charting a 578 in smallbore. Logan Fox had a 577 in smallbore and a 579 in air rifle, while Settlemires added a 586 in air rifle. Stacy Wheatley finished with a 581 in air rifle.

“Stacy Wheatley had a good score today with a 589 in air rifle,” Mullins said. “I am very happy for her and excited for her to continue her hard work towards reaching her milestones. She has really developed into a great shooter and her work ethic means she will only continue to improve.”
