LEXINGTON, Ky. – With one senior, Suzanne Holt, taking the course for the men’s and women’s squad, the future is bright for a young talented Kentucky cross country team but on a beautiful day at E.P. ‘Tom’ Sawyer Park the Wildcats failed to capture qualifying spots at the 2010 NCAA Southeast Regional on Saturday.
The women’s team finished 14th overall out of 37 teams, led by sophomore Cally Macumber, while the men, led by freshman Stacey Eden, finished 21st out of 34. Both teams entered the day needing top-five finishes for a chance to secure an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships.
Macumber claimed the highest finish for either team placing 65th out of 253 entrants, with a 6,000-meter time of 21:58.40. The native of Rochester Hills, Mich., is coming of a courage-filled performance at the Southeastern Conference Championships where she earned All-conference second-team honors for a 13th place finish. For the third time this season freshman Anna Bostrom crossed the finish line second on the team to place No. 69. Bostrom navigated the 6K course in 22:04.80 to crack the top-15 freshmen finishers.
Chelsea Oswald finished third on the team and 91st overall with a time 22:24.00. Oswald has had a season riddled with injuries keeping her out of three consecutive meets heading into the NCAA Regional. Last year at the NCAA Southeast Regional, at the same venue, she finished 34th with a time of 21:37. Freshman Taylor Wendler completed the course less than 10 spots behind Oswald claiming the 99th position with a time of 22:33.70.
The lone senior, Holt, finished her cross country career scoring for the Wildcats in 118th, with a time of 22:42.30. Holt competed in every event this season and in 2008 ran at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, the first for Kentucky since 1989.
Allison Peare and Hiruni Wijayaratne rounded out the UK women competitors finishing 132nd and 189th, respectively.
On the men’s side, for the first time this season, freshman Stacey Eden topped his teammates finishing 89th among 231 total competitors, completing the longest course of the season at 10,000m in 32:54.40. Eden is a native of Simpsonville, Ky., just down the road from the venue, Tom Sawyer Park. Josh Nadzam claimed the second spot on the team with a 92nd-place finish with a time of 32:58.60. Nadzam finished the year with three consecutive second-place team performances, the highest of the year.
Junior Colin Heenan made his way across the finish line next for the Wildcats in 115th position circling the two 5K loops in 33:25.10. Luis Orta had an out-of-character outing, placing 132nd, 100 spots under his career low. It’s also his lowest team finish, fourth, in his two-year career. Orta finished the race in 33:41.60.
Matt Wagner, Adam Kahleifeh and Matt Hillenbrand were the final three Wildcats to cross the finish line.
