Gymnastics Falls to No. 13 Arkansas in SEC Home Opener

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky gymnastics team posted a season-high score on uneven bars and got excellent individual performances by junior Whitney Rose on vault and sophomore Caitlyn Ciokajlo on uneven bars, but fell 193.525-194.975 to No. 13 Arkansas in its Southeastern Conference home opener at Memorial Coliseum on Friday.

Kentucky (2-2, 0-2 SEC) started the night off in very impressive fashion, posting high scores as a team on vault and bars. UK led through the first two rotations before running into some trouble on beam where Arkansas grabbed the lead held on for the win.

“Just like last week at Florida, we did some good things tonight,” said assistant coach Chuck Dickerson. “We put together some solid routines and now we have to get back to work in the gym on Sunday. We were leading a very good team tonight through two events. Our mistakes tonight are nothing a little hard work can’t fix.”

The Wildcats posted a 48.675 on vault led by Rose, who scored a 9.875 to take home event honors. Senior Andrea Mitchell finished tied for third on the event with a 9.75, while fellow senior Jasmine Minion posted a 9.7. Colleen Williams and Phylicia Reshard wrapped up the UK scores on vault as both seniors grabbed a 9.675. The solid score was a season high for Williams.

UK earned its lone win over Arkansas (1-2, 1-1 SEC) on bars, scoring a season-high mark of 48.9. Ciokajlo led the way on the event, claiming her second career bar title with a score of 9.875, which was a career high. The event title was the second time in three meets this season Ciokajlo has grabbed the top score on bars. Several other Wildcats performed well on the event as UK took home the top three scores. Mitchell finished second with a 9.8 and junior Storey Morris third with a 9.775. Reshard tied a career high with a 9.75 and Williams grabbed a season high 9.625, while Rose scored a 9.7

Mitchell led Kentucky’s efforts on beam, scoring a season-high mark of 9.725, while Reshard performed well in her first time in the beam lineup this season with a 9.7. Freshman Paige Krall continues to do well as the lone freshman on the event, posting a score of 9.575, while fellow freshman Audrey Harrison, performing as an exhibition, scored a 9.65.

The Wildcats finished off the night on floor, totaling a 48.675. Minion was the frontrunner for UK as she scored a 9.8 followed by Mitchell, who grabbed a 9.775. Rose and Reshard kept up their impressive performances on floor with Rose scoring a 9.75 and Reshard a 9.7. UK’s two freshmen in the rotation, Harrison and Kayla Sienkowski recorded a 9.65 and a 9.5 respectively.

Arkansas’ Jamie Pisani won the all-around competition at 39.125, while Mitchell wasn’t far behind, finishing second with a season high 39.05.

Kentucky will continue its play in the SEC next Friday when it takes on its fourth top-20 opponent so far this season in No. 5 Georgia. The meet is scheduled to being at 7 p.m. ET in Memorial Coliseum.
