Round Two Results
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sophomore Heather Lott led Kentucky in round two of the LSU Tiger Golf Classic, and the Wildcats finished with a 36-over par, 324, to fall one spot in the team standings. Kentucky is currently in 16th place.
The newly renovated University Club (Par 72, 6,186 yards) in Baton Rouge, La., once again gave every team in the 21-team field a challenge, with the average score increasing from 78.85 in round one to 79.06 in round two. Alabama, Arkansas, Virginia and Wake Forest are tied at the top of the field after two rounds. The quartet currently sits at 25-over par. Arkansas shot the low round of the day with an 8-over par 296.
“Unfortunately, things didn’t go very well for us today,” UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “The U-Club of LSU has re-done their golf course and their greens are now very firm, which has led to some higher scores. The whole field is struggling with this and we had some bigger numbers again that set us back. We have learned a lot from the past two days and we will try to use that for tomorrow. I am proud of my team for never giving in to the frustration though; they could have easily caved, but they kept fighting and we made a couple birdies coming in.”
Lott got her round off to a great start by eagling the par-4 10th hole, her first hole of the day. The sophomore, playing in her hometown of Baton Rouge, made the turn at 2-over par and came in with a 1-over par, 37.
Sophomore Betsie Johnson, the Wildcats’ scoring average leader during the fall, carded a 9-over par 81 Saturday. Freshman Liz Breed finished with a 10-over par, 82, and junior Ashlee Rose was 14-over par for the day.
Senior Louise Ljungstedt shot an 8-over par, 80, on Saturday. The Lidingo, Sweden, native is competing as an individual for the Cats this weekend.
Sophomore Ashleigh Albrecht, the Cats leader in scoring average this spring, withdrew from competition in the second round due to unbearable pain in her hip and leg.
Ryan Harrington of Golf Digest ranked the three-day tournament as the best women’s collegiate tournament of the spring season. Four of the top 10, and nine of the top 20 teams in the latest Golf World/NGCA Division I women’s coaches’ poll are featured in the tournament.
Sunday’s final round will begin at 9:30 a.m. ET, with a shotgun start. Kentucky, as they did Saturday, will begin its round from the 10th tee box.
