LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s golf team looks forward to facing tough competition when it begins postseason play at the Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championships. The 54-hole championship, which is being held at the Auburn University Club (par 72, 6,364 yards), will begin Friday and run through Sunday.
Competing for the Wildcats in the conference championship will be junior Ashlee Rose, sophomores Ashleigh Albrecht, Heather Lott and Betsie Johnson, and freshman Liz Breed.
The SEC Championships will be one of the most competitive tournaments the Wildcats have played in all year with seven of the conference’s 12 member institutions ranking inside the latest Golfweek/Sagarin top-20 rankings.
“We are looking forward to playing in the SEC Championship this weekend,” UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “We all really like this golf course and I feel it is a course we can play well on. Our team has been working hard these last few months and I’m confident we will be able to put all the pieces together and play well this week.”
Kentucky finished the regular season 11th in the SEC with a team stroke average of 304.33. Albrecht leads the Cats individually with the 29th best scoring average (75.00) in the conference. Alabama leads the conference heading into the championships and is ranked third in the country. Junior Megan McChrystal of LSU is the conference’s top scoring average leader.
Alabama won the conference championship last season with a team score of 848, while Vanderbilt’s Marina Alex won the individual title. The Wildcats finished in 11th place in 2010. No school has swept both the team and individual title since 2007 when Georgia and Taylor Lean won the championship in West Point, Miss.
Each of Kentucky’s golfers will begin their respective rounds on the 10th tee box. Rose will tee off first beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET, followed by Breed, Johnson, Lott and Albrecht, respectively, in 10-minute intervals.
