BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — After tossing a complete-game gem and striking out 10 in a win over No. 12 Arkansas on Saturday, Kentucky junior right-hander Alex Meyer has been named Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
A native of Greensburg, Ind., Meyer tossed his league-high third complete game of the year, allowing only three hits and one earned run, striking out 10. Meyer’s 10-strikeout gem was his seventh career double-digit strikeout game and his third this year.
Meyer allowed only one hard-hit ball in the game, an RBI double from Arkansas All-American James McCann in the second inning. The 6-foot-9, 220-pounder now owns 224 career strikeouts, good for the seventh-best total in UK career history.
With 81 strikeouts in 71.2 innings pitched, Meyer leads the SEC in strikeouts, fanning 10.17 per nine innings pitched, ranking second in the SEC in innings pitched, first in complete games, holding opponents to a .230 batting average. In his start vs. the red-hot Razorbacks, Meyer threw first-pitch strikes to 20 of the 34 hitters he faced in the complete-game gem. Meyer was most dominating over the final four innings of work, where he threw first-pitch strikes to five consecutive hitters to end the game and fanned five batters in the final three frames.
Meyer helped lift UK to the series win over the Razorbacks, who entered the game having won nine of their last 10 games and leading the SEC Western Division. The series victory was the first for the Wildcats over Arkansas since the 2005 campaign.
The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday, hosting Louisville at 7 p.m. ET at Cliff Hagan Stadium. The game will be live on the Big Blue Sports Network (radio), with the Voice of UK Baseball, Neil Price, calling the action. Fans in Lexington can hear the game live on WLAP 630-AM, in Louisville on WKJK 1080-AM and online at UKathletics.com. The game will also be televised live on BBSN, with Dick Gabriel, Doug Flynn and Ryan Lemond calling the action.
