SECAUCUS, N.J. — Kentucky sophomore right-hander Jordan Cooper has been selected with the first pick of the 23rd round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, it was announced on Tuesday evening.

Cooper is the fifth Wildcat to be selected in the first 30 rounds of the MLB Draft, consisting of the first round on Monday night and the following 29 rounds on Tuesday during Day 2 of the MLB Draft. With the 23rd round pick of the Pirates, Cooper has now been selected by the Pirates twice, as they selected him with their 17th-round selection in the 2009 MLB Draft.

UK junior right-hander Alex Meyer became the second-highest draft pick in program history on Monday, going No. 23 to the Washington Nationals. During Day 2 on Tuesday, Chad Wright (ninth round; Detroit Tigers), Braden Kapteyn (15th round; Boston Red Sox) and Taylor Black (16th round; Philadelphia Phillies) were selected. The school record for most draft picks in a single season came in 2008, when seven Wildcats were selected.

Cooper, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound right-hander, made 12 starts with two relief appearances as a sophomore in 2011. Cooper totaled a 3-2 record and a 4.61 ERA with one save, tossing 66.1 innings with 29 walks and 47 strikeouts. UK’s opening-day starter, Cooper excelled in a midweek role, going 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA against non-conference foes. A native of Shelbyville, Tenn., Cooper turned in six quality starts in 2011, and without four rough starts, posted a 3-0 record and a 1.72 ERA in over 50 innings.

After UK claimed the Southeastern Conference Championship in 2006, Kentucky has boasted a bevy of draft selections. Since 2006 and including the picks on Tuesday, the Wildcats have had a total of 39 players selected in the MLB Draft or sign a free agent contract. Since 1965, UK has had a total of 151 players drafted or sign a free agent contract, with 26-percent of the 151 total players coming since the 2006 season.

The MLB Draft will conclude through round 30 on Tuesday and resume on Wednesday with the remaining 20 rounds. The draft can be seen live on MLB.com.
