The last time Kentucky faced Southeastern Conference foe LSU, the Tigers were ranked No. 1 in the nation and were on their way to winning the 2007 National Championship game. Four years later, Kentucky and LSU meet again in a similar situation as Kentucky again hopes to knock off the No. 1-ranked and undefeated LSU Tigers at Tiger Stadium on Saturday.
The game marks the third time the Wildcats have faced a top-ranked LSU team with UK sitting at 1-1 in those games. No. 1 LSU took down UK 9-0 in 1959, while UK defeated No. 1 LSU 43-37 in triple overtime in 2007 at Commonwealth Stadium. This is the first time Kentucky has faced at No. 1 LSU squad in Baton Rouge, La.
Kentucky enters the game having lost back-to-back contests, including its SEC opener last week against No. 15 Florida. Quarterback Morgan Newton has led the UK offense by completing 59-of-110 passes for 590 yards and five touchdowns. Newton’s favorite target has been junior wide receiver La’Rod King, who has caught a touchdown pass in every game this season. King leads UK with 19 catches for 276 yards and four touchdowns.
The Wildcats’ defense is led by senior Danny Trevathan, who leads the SEC in tackles with 46 and is UK’s leader with 5.5 tackles for loss and two sacks this season. Trevathan has also forced two fumbles in 2011 with one fumble recovery. Safety/linebacker Winston Guy is third in the SEC with 41 tackles, adding 4.5 tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions and one quarterback hurry.
The game begins a two-game road trip for the Wildcats, who will travel to No. 10/9 South Carolina next week before their lone bye week of the season.

It has been four years already, but Kentucky fans don’t need much reminding about the last time the Wildcats beat LSU. It was 2007 and the Tigers were on the way to a national championship when UK defeated Les Miles’ team 43-37 in one of the biggest wins in school history.

Burden, Tydlacka Named Game Captains For LSU Game
University of Kentucky senior cornerback Randall Burden and senior punter Ryan Tydlacka have been named game captains for Kentucky’s contest at LSU in Baton Rouge, La., on Saturday at 12:21 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
Game captains are usually chosen on the basis of performance in the previous game. The native of LaGrange, Ga., recorded two tackles and a quarterback hurry in the Florida game. Kentucky and LSU will meet for the 56th time in school history … The Wildcats won the last meeting between the two schools, taking down the No. 1-ranked Tigers in triple overtime at Commonwealth Stadium in 2007 … LSU leads the all-time series 38-16-1, including a 22-5-1 mark in Baton Rouge, La. … The Wildcats last victory over LSU at Tiger Stadium was when they took down No. 21 LSU 39-36 in 1998 … UK and LSU met annually from 1952 to 2002 but the two schools have only met two times since in 2006 and 2007.
Last Time vs. LSU
André Woodson’s seven-yard pass to wide receiver Steve Johnson in triple overtime lifted No. 17 Kentucky to its first win against a No. 1 team since 1964 as the Wildcats knocked off top-ranked LSU, 43-37, in front of 70,902 fans – the fourth-largest crowd in Commonwealth Stadium history.
Trailing 27-21 heading into the fourth quarter, the Wildcats benefited from two field goals by Lones Seiber to knot the score at 27-all with 4:21 remaining in the game.
After the two teams traded scores in the first two overtimes, the Wildcats got the ball first in the third OT. On third and goal from the LSU seven-yard line, Woodson found Johnson for the game-winning score. It was Johnson’s second-game winning TD of the season against a top-10 team as he also had the go-ahead touchdown against then-No. 9 Louisville. The Wildcat defense then stifled three runs by LSU’s Jacob Hester on the final drive before Braxton Kelley came up with the game-clinching tackle, stopping Charles Scott for a one-yard gain on fourth-and-two.
Woodson finished 21-of-38 for 250 yards with three scoring strikes.The signal-caller also had a 12-yard run for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Johnson had a career day, finishing with seven catches for 134 yards. Running back Derrick Locke carried the ball 20 times for 64 yards with a touchdown.
Wesley Woodyard made 11 tackles for the Wildcats, while Jeremy Jarmon had a career-high 10 stops.
