LEXINGTON, Ky. – After taking down the four-time defending national champions on Friday, the No. 9 seed UCLA Bruins continued its impressive run through the NCAA Tournament, taking down the overall No. 1 seed Texas Longhorns 3-1 on Saturday at Memorial Coliseum.
The win advances UCLA to the National Semifinals for the 12th time in school history. The Bruins will play the winner of the Minneapolis Regional on Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com. Texas ends the season at 25-5.
The Bruins were led in the game by junior outside hitter Rachael Kidder, who tabbed a match-high 26 kills, while fellow junior outside hitter Tabi Love posted a career-high tying 18 kills. Senior defensive specialist Lainey Gera gathered 22 digs in the match, while senior setter Lauren Van Orden collected an impressive 57 assists.
Texas out blocked the Burins 10 to 7 behind the impressive performance from senior Rachael Adams, who had two block solos, three block assists and a team-high 19 kills. Senior libero Sydney Yogi had a team-high 15 digs, while sophomore setter Hannah Allison earned 51 assists.
The win for UCLA avenged season-ending losses to Texas in two of the last three seasons after Texas defeated UCLA in the NCAA Tournament in 2010 and 2008. UCLA now leads the all-time series 16-8, while the series is tied 3-3 in NCAA Tournament play.
