LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team, led by sophomore Liz Breed, finished the first round of the SunTrust Gator Women’s Invitational in fourth. The Wildcats shot an 11-over-par 291 on their first day of competition at the Mark Bostic Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
Through one round, Kentucky is just seven strokes off the lead. No. 2 Alabama currently sits atop the leaderboard after shooting a 4-over-par 284. Georgia is just two strokes off the lead at 6-over-par 286 while Florida State is in third, six strokes off the lead at 10-over-par 290. Kentucky is in fourth with Auburn rounding out the top five at 13-over-par 293.
“Today was a very successful day for us,” said UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst. “All of the girls stayed patient and they did a great job of sticking to our game plan.”
Breed is tied for fifth through day one after shooting a career-low, even-par 70. Breed’s previous round low was a 71 at the 2010 Cougar Classic. With a team-high five birdies, Breed is just three strokes off the lead.
Junior Heather Lott finished the first round in a tie for 13th after shooting a 2-over-par 72, matching a season-best. Lott had a consistent first round that consisted of a birdie to go along with 14 pars. Junior Betsie Johnson is just one stroke behind Lott with a 3-over-par 73. Johnson’s two birdies leave her in a tie for 18th entering the second round.
Junior Megan Moir sunk two birdies on day one to leave her in a tie for 42nd at 6-over-par 76. Senior Ashlee Rose shot a 7-over-par 77, entering the second round in a tie for 51st.
“I am very proud of the whole group,” said coach Borst. “This is the kind of golf that this team is capable of. It’s fun to see all their hard work come to fruition.”
Kentucky will begin the second round of the SunTrust Gator Women’s Invitational Saturday morning from the first tee box. The Wildcats will tee off in nine-minute intervals with Rose leading off at 9:45 a.m. Rose will be followed by Moir, Johnson, Lott and Breed at 10:21 a.m. All times are Eastern.
