LEXINGTON, Ky. – Head coach Craig Skinner and his staff have hauled in a top-15 class as rated by PrepVolleyball.com it was announced by the site. UK’s four-member class for the upcoming 2012 season has combined to win six state high school titles and a pair of national club national championships.
The class of setter Morgan Bergren, (Muncie, Indiana); middle blocker Sara Schwarzwalder, (North Royalton, Ohio); defensive specialist Kelsey Wolf, (Cincinnati, Ohio); and right side hitter Shelby Workman, (Shawnee Mission, Kansas) are Skinner’s sixth top-30 ranked class since becoming UK’s coach in December 2004.
PrepVolleyball.com has this to say about UK’s incoming class, “One of the most polished all-around volleyball classes UK has had in a while. Their strengths complement the current team and will take Kentucky volleyball to the next level.”
Bergren ranks among the top-150 Senior Aces by PrepVolleyball. She helped guide her club squad to the AAU National Championship in 2011. Schwarzwalder is rated as the nation’s No. 61 recruit by PrepVolleyball. Schwarzwalder garnered All-Ohio second team status in 2011 as well as earning The Post’s first-team honors in 2010. Furthermore, Schwarzwalder was tabbed the North Coast Power League most valuable player this season.
Wolf is a 2011 Under Armour All-America Honorable Mention selection. PrepVolleyball named her as one of its Defensive Dandies and as a member of its top-150 Senior Aces. Wolfe led her high squad captured the 2011 State High School Championship and she earned first-team All-State honors. As a junior, she was a third-team All-State selection and the team’s most valuable player.
Workman captured the 2010 Kansas 5A Player of the Year honors and was named among the All-State tournament team in all four seasons of action. She is rated as one of the top-65 players among PrepVolleyball and was an All-America selection. ESPN also ranks Workman as one of the top-25 seniors in the nation.
The dynamic four-member class joins three returning All-Americans and six of eight starters to a Sweet 16 team from a season ago. UK kicks off its 2012 season August 24 when the Wildcats host the annual Kentucky Classic. UK will take on North Carolina at 7 p.m. ET on the opening night of the season.
