WEST POINT, Miss. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team concluded their opening round of the 2012 fall season at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational, shooting a 6-over-par, 294. The Wildcats are locked in a tie for second place in the tournament, trailing the leader Tulane by four strokes.
“Overall I think we got off to a solid start today,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “This golf course sets up to our strengths and I look for us to take advantage of that in the next two days. We have a very talented group and I look forward to seeing what tomorrow has in store for us!”
Senior Ashleigh Albrecht led the way for Kentucky, turning in scorecard of 1-under-par 71. The Murrieta, Calif. native birdied four holes, including three on the front nine, placing her in a tie for third overall, just two shots off the leader.
Senior Heather Lott also performed well for the Cats today, tying a career-low with an even par round of 72. Lott sank four birdies, with three coming on the back nine and sits in a tie for fifth overall.
Freshman Meghan McDougall dug herself out of an early hole, carding a 3-over-par 75. McDougall was 5-over after bogeys on holes 12 and 13 but responded for her first birdies of the day on 15 and 16 and is in a tie for 20th.
Junior Liz Breed is tied for 27th after shooting a 4-over par 76, while freshman Cylia Damerau is tied for 41st with a 7-over par 79.
Freshman Sarah Harris, who is playing this week as an individual is tied for 11th overall after carding a 2-over 74.
The second of three rounds will resume on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. Damerau is scheduled to tee off first for UK at 10:20 a.m., with Breed, McDougall, Lott and Albrecht to follow, respectively, in 10 minute intervals. Harris will get underway starting on hole 10 at 10:30 a.m.
The field consists of 11 teams, including Arkansas, Cincinnati, Kennesaw State, Memphis, Mississippi State, Murray State, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Tulane and USF. The third and final round of play will be on Wednesday beginning at 9:30 a.m., wrapping up the 54-hole stroke play tournament.
