LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky goalkeeper Kayla King was named a CollegeSoccer360.com ‘National Primetime Performer’ for her career-best weekend as she shutout the Tennessee Lady Vols and Georgia Bulldogs in two critical Southeastern Conference games, it was announced Tuesday afternoon.
King had her best weekend in the Blue and White, recording back-to-back, 90-minute shutouts on the road at Tennessee and Georgia. The Louisville, Ky., native had a career high 10 saves Sunday in Athens and kept a clean sheet vs. Tennessee on Friday night as the Wildcats picked up a crucial six points. King fended off 36 shots over the two games and dropped her goals against average to 0.81 on the season. The back-to-back shutout performance was a career first for King, as she had recorded one prior in her career entering the weekend.
Kentucky completed its first-ever SEC-weekend road sweep under head coach Jon Lipsitz, defeating Tennessee and Georgia. The win over Georgia on Sunday afternoon was the Cats’ first win over UGA since the 1999 season and first in Athens, Ga., since 1998. The Wildcats defeated the Lady Vols on Friday evening for the third time in the last four tries.
In addition to being named a CollegeSoccer360.com ‘Primetime Performer’, King was also honored by CollegeSportsMadness.com as the National Defensive Player of the Week. and the CollegeSoccerMadness.com player of the week for the SEC. She also earned the SEC’s weekly award Monday afternoon, claiming the SEC Defensive Player of the Week award for the first time in her career.
UK will be home for the first time in the month of October on Friday, where the Wildcats finish out the season with three-straight home games. Kentucky will face South Carolina on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex in a game that will be shown live on Fox Sports South.
