LEXINGTON, Ky. – Two University of Kentucky women’s tennis players reached the singles round of 16 and a doubles pair made the quarterfinals, wrapping up its weekend at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind.
“Throughout the whole tournament our team competed with a lot of determination and tactical awareness,” UK head coach Carlos Drada said. “Today we had some very close matches which came down to just points. However, the players who competed well this weekend performed at the best of their ability both mentally and physically by focusing on simple patterns and rituals. I am excited to witness our team’s progress during the rest of the season.”
Junior Caitlin McGraw and senior Jessica Stiles dropped a close contest to Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares of Vanderbilt to end their run in the doubles bracket. The 8-5 loss brought the tandem’s record on the weekend to 2-1.
McGraw finished the weekend 2-1 in singles action, falling in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) to Brynn Boren of Tennessee. McGraw began her day with a comeback win 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-3, over Gisella Pere of Purdue. Stiles fell to Krisztina Kapitany in the round of 32 on Saturday, 6-2, 6-2.
Freshman Nadia Ravita began Saturday’s action with a three set win (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) over Purdue’s Imogen Golder before falling to Vanderbilt’s Lauren Mira in the round of 16. Fellow freshman Kirsten Lewis was knocked out in the round of 32 in a third set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(5).
Sophomore Stephanie Fox was forced to retire in the consolation bracket after splitting the first two sets with Amandine Faouzi of Eastern Kentucky. Junior Khristina Blajkevitch began her day with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Louisville’s Stefanie Villajuan in the first round of the consolation bracket. Blajkevitch then fell to Alex Brinker of Xavier.
Kentucky will return to action next weekend at the Knoxville Hidden Dual to wrap up the fall season
