LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 9 University of Kentucky men’s tennis team will begin the 2013 dual match season on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader in Lexington, Ky., as UK will host Northern Kentucky in the season opener at 11:00 a.m. ET, followed by a nightcap match against in-state foe Morehead State at 5:00 pm. ET at the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Center.
“We are looking forward to starting the spring season,” UK head coach Cedric Kauffmann said, who begins his opening season as the head coach of the Wildcats. “We can’t wait to see how well our young freshman perform on Sunday versus two very quality teams. We have put in a lot of hard work in the offseason and now it’s time for us to translate that into matches.”
The Wildcats will enter the weekend ranked in the top-10 of the nation, as UK checks in at No. 9 in the season-opening edition of the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Rankings. In addition to the team ranking, junior Tom Jomby checks in at No. 15 in the nation and is joined by senior Anthony Rossi who is ranked No. 94 to begin the year.
Kentucky is coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history, capturing the 2012 SEC regular season championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the second-consecutive season.
This will be the second match of the season for Northern Kentucky, as the Norse took on the Duquesne Dukes out of the Atlantic 10 on Friday night. The Norse are under the direction of Brian Nester, who is in his second year at the helm of the NKU tennis program. NKU is veteran-laden, as the Norse have four seniors on their roster.
The nightcap match will also be against an in-state foe, as Morehead State will make the short trip to Lexington for a match beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET. The Eagles also have played a match in the 2013 season, falling on Friday night at No. 34 Louisville 7-0. MSU is under the direction of Kevin Fulton, who is in his seventh season as head coach.
