Oct. 5, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. – After capturing an opening-set win over Southern California’s No. 7 Raymond Sarmiento in the round of 16 at the 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships, University of Kentucky men’s tennis junior Tom Jomby fell in a tight three-set match, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 on Friday afternoon, marking the end of his run in the tournament.

The action Friday was all a part of the 2012 ITA All-American at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., as the Hurricane served as the host for the event.

Jomby captured the opening set in a tiebreaker, which at the time, made it five-straight sets that the junior had won before the highly ranked Sarmiento responded to take the final two sets at three and four.

In the final set, Sarmiento made the first move, breaking Jomby at two-all to take the 3-2 lead. After falling behind 4-2, Jomby held in his final two service games to make Sarmiento serve it out at 5-4, and ultimately take the third set 6-4 for the win.

In the consolation bracket, senior Anthony Rossi earned a straight-set win on Thursday over Jamie Whitford of William and Mary 7-5, 6-4 before falling today in the second round to Duke’s Raphael Hemmeler in a hard-fought three setter. The final tally of the match was 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

The fall season continues with the United States Tennis Association/ITA Regional Indoor Championships, which will be held in Memphis, Tenn., from Oct. 18-22.
